About Us
Polomintyfresh.co.uk is the officially unofficial website for Polo Explorer Scout Unit. It has been started after a request for one, mainly to show off our achievements and what we have done.
We also have various photos of ourselves and our activities. We are not allowed to give full personal details, for obvious reasons, so we often refer to people by their nicknames.
We are fortunate enough to have our own hut, owned by the district, and this has become the district Explorer HQ. This has been nicknamed "Hillery Hall", after the unit which were originally nicknamed Hillery Unit - nobody could decide on a proper name at the time. Whilst the unit are now known as Polo Unit, the name for the hall has stayed.
The hall itself has been around for sometime, and was barely used for two or three years before we adopted it. Whilst we have been in there, we have done some redecoration of one or two parts, but there is still a lot of work to be done. For example, in the main hall the floor has several holes in it around the edge (could really do with replacing), the main hall the ceiling is a bit thin and doesn't tend to keep the warmth in during the winter, the electrics need redoing and vastly extending (there's about 4 sockets in the whole building, needs new fuse box), the heaters need to be taken off of the ceiling and placed around the sides of the hall, the kitchen needs gutting and replacing (although we do have numerous kitchen cupboards sitting in the porch area, and the sink is ok), the main hall needs patching in one or two places then completely redecorating, and the garage needs some form of overhead storage & hooks to hang things on so that you can go in there without having to climb over stuff. Not much then.
Ok, so it may seem like lots needs to be done, but its not that bad really. We have a reasonable size hall, kitchen, boys & girls loos, and a garage. We also have a small carpark to one side for about 5 or 6 cars (needs clearing by jcb, then some form of surface put down), and a small-ish grassed area to the other (needs clearing of tall grass, weeds, and whatever else has grown there). We are also lucky enough to have a park at the end of the road, about 10 mins walk away.
We meet in the Benfleet area, but have members from Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersley, Canvey, and one or two other loctions. New members are always welcome.
